Mary Loose DeViney, of Tuel Jewelers, and Vice Chairwoman for Member Services on the Board of Directors of the Charlottesville Regional Chamber of Commerce, traveled to Washington, D.C. last week to voice her concerns with lawmakers and regulators at the 2004 National Small Business Summit, hosted by the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB).
Joining more than 600 small-business owners and advocates from across the nation, Ms. DeViney had the opportunity to participate in policy and issue sessions, face-to-face with high-ranking officials from the Department of Labor and Commerce, and the Small Business Administration. Speakers at the Summit included President George W. Bush, House Speaker Dennis Hastert, Commerce Secretary Don Evans, and Labor Secretary Elaine Chao.
"The Summit was a wonderful opportunity to meet face to face with members of the Administration and ask direct questions about policy that affects small business," said Ms. DeViney. "I was delighted to hear President George W. Bush extol the virtues of our Community College System in America and how it really impacts workforce development which in turn directly affects our local small businesses. Since I interact with the Business Education Roundtables locally, and President Frank Friedman at PVCC, these were encouraging words."

LexisNexis has won a global award from their parent company, Reed Elsevier. The award is a grant, which will benefit Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic Regional Unit of the Virginias and Carolinas by establishing a recording studio at LexisNexis.
The $10,000 grant from Reed Elsevier comes from its Reed Elsevier Cares program, which provides employees with sixteen paid hours per year to perform community service. Reed Elsevier celebrated the one-year anniversary of its Reed Elsevier Cares in 2004 by offering a challenge to each of its divisions around the world to submit an activity partnering employees with a local organization. The entries had to epitomize Reed Elsevier’s dedication to playing a positive role in the local and global communities, primarily through employee involvement, with the central focus being education for disadvantaged young people and initiatives of importance to local employees. The LexisNexis Charlottesville office won the top prize for its proposal to operate an employee-run onsite recording studio for the Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic organization.

Montague, Miller & Co REALTORS has joined ranks with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville (HFHGC) in the first sponsorship of its kind in the Charlottesville community. The company, sales associates, and staff have taken on the challenge of fundraising and volunteering to build a Habitat home in Central Virginia. Montague, Miller & Co. REALTORS is the first real estate company to be the sole financial sponsor of a habitat home.
For every person who attended a Montague, Miller & Co. Open House on April 18 and May 23, the company donated $5 to this house fund. Montague, Miller makes a corporate donation for every house that is sold and many associates of the company are making matching donations to the house fund with every house they sell. As of June 1st the company has raised almost $30,000 of the $60,000 needed to cover most of the cost of land and materials for the Habitat home. Soon a lot for the house construction will be selected and a qualified Habitat partner family will join Montague, Miller & Co. volunteers to build a new home.
"To have the support of a group of people so intimately involved in the local housing market is a wonderful statement of sensitivity to the lack of affordable housing in our community." said Jerry Bailey, Chairman of HFHGC.
