The AIDS/HIV Services Group (ASG) of Charlottesville, VA, has recently been awarded over $180,000 by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to support a new housing program designed to serve the HIV-infected homeless population in Central Virginia.

According to Kathy Baker, Executive Director of ASG, the funds will provide scattered-site rental housing to affected families within the 2,200 square mile Thomas Jefferson Health District (TJHD). The funds will also allow ASG greater flexibility to meet individual’s needs, while enabling them to remain in their home communities with their family intact.

"The great majority of ASG clients live in poverty, with nearly half earning incomes at or below the poverty line of $8,860 per year," said Meredith Richards, President of the ASG Board of Directors. "This makes it extremely difficult to find affordable housing, and it becomes even more difficult when the costs related to HIV care are considered."

ASG has provided HIV-related services to people living with HIV/AIDS in Central Virginia since 1986, and remains the only AIDS services organization (AS0) in the Thomas Jefferson Housing District.

The McClung Companies received the 2004 Business of the Year Award from the Greater Augusta Regional Chamber of Commerce at its annual Spring awards banquet. McClung’s expansion in 2004 was one of the reasons why the Waynesboro print and graphics company was chosen for the award, explained Chamber President and CEO Ben Carter.

"The Chamber recognizes Tom Trevillian as one of our strongest business leaders and McClung as a tremendous asset to the community," said Mr. Carter.

McClung President and CEO Tom Trevillian said, "It’s a special honor to be acknowledged by your business colleagues. I’m very grateful for the Chamber’s tribute." Last October, when it merged with Color Graphics Corporation of Harrisonburg, McClung realized significant growth in sales.

General Manager Dave Perkins, who received the award for McClung, noted, "Our success last year was a team effort by our entire family of employees. The Business of the Year Award belongs to everyone at the company."

Better Living, Inc., Better Living Components, Inc. and the Better Living Foundation will be donating $285,000 to local charities in 2005. The money is expected to come from the sale of the "Better Living House," currently under construction in the Rockbridge Subdivision of the Highlands in Crozet. The house is expected to be completed by late September 2005.

According to Richard Nunley, Better Living Chairman, the primary purpose for building and selling the "Better Living House" is to raise awareness of the many local charities engaged in bettering the Charlottesville community.

An interactive endeavor:

Residents of Central Virginia can go to the Better Living web site and view a list of all charities with the potential to benefit from the sale of the "Better Living House." Individuals can vote for their favorite charity. The local company has already earmarked a number of worthy causes to receive donations. However, five $1,000 gifts will be made based on the interactive vote tally.

The Nunley's, a native Charlottesville family and owners of Better Living, Inc. and its' affiliates, have a long history of charitable contributions. In 1988, the company established the Better Living Foundation for the sole intent of giving back to the community.

"We are very grateful to the community for supporting our businesses and believe that the best way to help the community is by helping those less fortunate than ourselves," explains Mr. Nunley.

Moore's Electrical & Mechanical Construction, Inc. on June 1st, 2005, celebrated their 20th Anniversary. Mr. Dale Moore founded Moore’s in the spring of 1985. Now twenty years later the company has grown to nearly 350 full-time employees. Based in Altavista, Virginia, Moore’s Electrical & Mechanical, Inc. also has offices in Charlottesville and Richmond. Beginning in the Summer of 2005, Moore's will be expanding its Service Division coverage to the entire state of North Carolina. This expansion will be in addition to the Construction Services already offered across all of Virginia and northern North Carolina.

The three-fold vision upon which Moore’s Electrical & Mechanical, Inc. was founded has remained the same: (1) to build a company that our partners could be proud of and feel is the best place they have ever worked; (2) to give our customers the best service they have ever experienced; (3) to give back to the communities we serve.

As part of that "vision" Moore’s has worked hard to give back to the communities they have helped to build. Moore’s works to support the youth of their region by supporting youth related activities such as sports teams and educational opportunities. In 1999, Moore’s began donating 10% of their net profits to charitable organizations. In recent years Moore's has helped to support the March of Dimes, Habitat for Humanity, the American Red Cross, Junior Achievement, the YMCA, and many other organizations. Most recently, Moore’s was awarded the "2005 Business Recognition Award for Education" from the Danville/Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce.
