In a move to help college students combat the high cost of textbooks, Piedmont Virginia Community College this week launched a website on which students can buy and sell used textbooks. The website, the first of its kind in the Virginia Community College System, allows students to post books for sale and to search for books they wish to purchase. Information is provided so students can contact each other to arrange transactions.

The site is PVCC’s response to growing concerns about rising textbook costs. Full-time students purchasing new books often spend more than $500 a semester.

Although some used books are available through the college bookstore, the supply has not kept up with demand, said Marcy Stoll, vice president for instruction and student services. "We believe this new website will, in time, provide a steady stream of used textbooks and will benefit our students and their families with lower textbook costs."
