What does your organization do?
When you’re asked about our human differences—race, gender, culture, religion, class, disability, or sexual orientation—your response reveals one of three unconscious patterns. Each pattern has strengths and blind spots. Dare to face the blind spot and light up your life. We’ve got your back with innovative assessment and online experiential learning.

What do you like about being a Chamber member?
Seeing and supporting people to go after the things they love.

What is unique about your organization and the work you do in our community?
Our work represents the evolution of DEI - it's about GIVING UP trying to change people, organizations, communities and the world, going INSIDE, lighting up our missions, living from solidarity with others, and BECOMING the change!

How did you choose the field you're in?
It chose me! I was raised in my indigenous/Latino family but have white skin privilege in the world. When I first met my Anglo grandfather as a 4 year old. I went to hug him and he stopped me forcefully and said "men shake hands". In my world men hugged. That was my first inner train wreck around difference--still sorting them out.

Who or what has inspired you most in your career?
Though my father died when I was 5 I learned just a few years ago he did cross racial/cultural work back in the 40's! When I do this work I experience his presence, his playfulness, his warmth.

What is your most memorable experience in your career?
In Colorado, I used to be a middle school principal in what is called the "Expeditionary Learning" model. One day, the schools called a "snow day" so I was getting work done in my office. My administrative assistant knocked on my door and said, "I need to show you something." She led me to the gym/all purpose room. It was packed with kids. They came because they loved school, because they were engaged with their projects and learning, and each other! They felt safe and supported and so they would not be stopped.

What's your favorite thing about the Charlottesville area?
We love our home in the Southwood neighborhood so shout out to our local Habitat for Humanity and the beautiful Biscuit Run park next door!

What is your favorite quote or piece of advice?
"Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it: boldness has genius, power, and magic in it." ~Goethe
