Chamber Blog

I am incredibly grateful to the Charlottesville Regional Chamber of Commerce for the opportunity to take part in Chamber Abroad last month. This trip was more than international travel—it was a shared experience of learning, connection, and cultural immersion. During the trip, I had the pleasure of travelling alongside fellow chamber members from Washington D.C., Winchester, and Franklin, North Carolina. Together, we resided in the breathtaking Costa del Sol and visited unforgettable destinations including Málaga, Granada, Seville, and Ronda—each offering its own story and scenic views.

As an avid traveler, I wanted to go on this trip to experience European culture. I was intrigued to experience business and community from a global perspective. As a professional, it is easy to feel rooted in our local markets, but this journey reminded me how valuable it is to zoom out. Chamber Abroad was not just about sightseeing, it was about seeing how other cultures communicate, collaborate, and celebrate connections. I knew this experience would expand me personally and professionally, and it absolutely delivered.

Every city brought something unique. Málaga felt effortlessly vibrant—a blend of beachside calm, historic streets, and modern life. Granada was deeply moving, especially visiting the Alhambra, and learning about the layers of history that shaped the region. Each place offered a different lens into Spanish culture, history, and daily life.

One of the most meaningful parts of the trip was the cultural exchange. Sharing meals late into the evening, navigating local customs, and watching how Spaniards truly savor time together was eye-opening. There is an intentional slowness in Europe that builds connection.

The relationships formed on this trip were truly impactful. Traveling with chamber members from different cities created an environment where new friendships formed quickly. Whether it was bus conversations, shared laughter during long walking tours, or supporting each other through travel hiccups, we bonded in indescribable ways. We had the amazing opportunity to have Mariola as our tour guide the entirety of the trip. She was genuinely proud and enthusiastic about sharing her culture and eager to connect with the group beyond surface-level tourism.

For anyone considering a trip like this, my advice is simple: GO! However, make sure to go with an open mind. Be willing to try unfamiliar foods, ask questions, and embrace moments that seem uncomfortable at first but truly end up being the best memory. And most importantly, talk to people. Many of the richest moments came from spontaneous conversations rather than planned activities.

As I reflect on this experience, I am able to feel inspired, grounded, and deeply thankful—for the opportunity, the people, and the perspective gained. Chamber Abroad reminded me how powerful travel can be when shared with a community that values growth, curiosity, and connection. This experience did not just expand my passport, it expanded my understanding of what it means to build relationships, both locally and globally.
